I’d originally planned for there to be several figures, all seated holding staffs, but after I completed the first one I decided that this would just be a single figure composition.

The poor life-model for this figure told me after she’d sent me her photographs that she had tonsillitis, followed by I was going to cancel but I felt my tonsillitis look was really on brand for your work. I’m not sure what to think about that (but I have to admit that she was right!)

The full drawing is landscape in orientation, with the seated figure central and empty space either side of her.

In some ways it’s an echo of the rest point from Votive, but experienced individually rather than collectively.

The perspective of the imagined viewer is even lower than in Votive, as if they are lying down looking upwards at the seated woman.
