May Queen (England’s Dark Dreaming № 18)

May Queen (England’s Dark Dreaming № 18)

This is the eighteenth large-scale charcoal drawing in my England’s Dark Dreaming series.

The May Queen is a personification of Spring, celebrated at May Day, the beginning of Spring. In some folklore sources the May Queen is killed at the end of the May Day festivals, a necessary sacrifice to ensure a more fruitful future.
