Some notes on recent (in)activity

A view of my studio with drawings scattered on the floor around an easel

I’m starting to feel that — finally! — some thoughts are starting to come together for some new artwork. It’s been a particularly uncreative past few months for me, so this comes as a very welcome relief.

I don’t have any definite ideas yet, but I have a familiar feeling that has often heralded the end of a dry spell in my artistic practice, and the floor of my studio is becoming increasingly littered with fragmentary sketches.

Hopefully this also means I’ll be able to revive my email newsletter on the first of next month - I’ve left it dormant for the past couple of months because I’ve had nothing new to show!

Last weekend, alongside Helen Lundström Erwin and Dr Andrew Fergus Wilson, I was on a panel Q&A session on storytelling in the 21st century that was part of the Cultural Futures Conference 2025, organised by Dee Chainey-Jones, which was really great. Hopefully the recording will be made available at some point in the future and I’ll share the link.

Meanwhile I’ve just finished reading Barrowbeck by Andrew Michael Hurley which was very good indeed, and I’m about to start The Great When by Alan Moore. On the non-fiction side I’m also reading The Story of Drawing: An Alternative History of Art by Susan Owens.
